Handmade floral maternity dress

I still remember my first pregnancy as if it was yesterday, and yet in a blink of an eye it was over. I refused to purchase maternity clothes, which in honest truth I ended up buying a pair of work dress pants and some white shorts (which were absurdly short for even the non pregnant me).
What I managed to do was make myself simple broadcloth (inexpensive) shift dresses. I leaned towards the darker colors since they weren't as see through as the lighter colours (plus I didn't know how easy it was to line a shiftdress). During those scorching hot summer days in North Carolina I was more than happy to have not lined my dresses.

It was such a simple pattern, since I didn't really care to have any darts to emphasize any curves. I just really wanted to make sure my belly fit comfortably. Surprisingly enough I would get a ton of compliments on my basic dresses, the same dresses that I would sew on our bedroom floor, the same dress that cost me less than 5 bucks to make each.

Being self taught I didn't know much about sewing different techniques back then. So once my little babe was out of the womb I no longer found these handmade dresses useful. Since in order to feed my ravenous baby boy I would have to completely undress to breastfeed him. That wouldn't do me any good if we were out and about.

So now I'm doing something a little different this time around to extended the time period of these dresses. I've decided to add a button placket down the front of my dresses to be able to breastfeed once my angel is out. A button placket is usually found in the sleeve cuffs of button downs. They are extremely easy to do, it's just critical to get the exact measurements down. My obsessive personality caused me to just watch way too many YouTube videos of all the ways different people sewed their plackets, read a ton of tutorials, and even dissect a placket on one of my own store bought shirts.

However after the hunt I found this one tutorial to be the most helpful for me at least.

Plus I figured out how to use my sewing machine to sew on buttons (my fingers are very grateful).

Overall, I'm impressed with how much more I've learned between pregnancies and yet how there is still so much more for me to discover. I do believe in trial and error, but it's just so satisfying when you get it right on the first time.

Hope you guys try to go out an make yourself a little something.
